Home's Cool: Week Eight

POSTING THIS A WEEK LATE.... OOPS!

Well, we had a great trip to AR. It felt good to take a break from school for a week, but we are back at this week. I was expecting more of a push back from the kids after being off for a week, but they jumped right back in without a problem. Take a peak at what we did this week.....

Bible - We started learning a new memory verse, Matthew 7:24.

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock"

We are learning that Jesus is our Rock and firm foundation. We have sung songs like, "Rock of Ages" , "The Solid Rock", and "The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock". We also added to our Jesus poster. Next week, I have something special planned to help them remember this Truth about our Savior.

History - This week we have been reading about Benjamin Franklin. We have learned about his life, his character, and his achievements. The kids made a Poor Richard's Almanac and added a description of Benjamin Franklin to their history notebooks. We also finished reading The Courage of Sarah Noble. Can you believe that I got choked up when Sarah's family returned and she said good-bye to Tall John?! I'm a sappy one for sure!

Science - We are finishing up our chapter on pollination, so this week was simply review. The kids wrote a story and comic strip about flower pollination. We also opened our box from a couple of weeks ago to see if our flower was preserved in the borax.

Art - We looked at and discussed the painting New York Waterfront by Stuart Davis. We talked about abstract art, then the kids cut out construction paper pieces to make their own abstract landscape picture.

Sorry it is sideways. I am too lazy to go back now and fix it!

Music -
This week we began listening to The Story of Tchaikovsky in Words and Music. We have learned where he was from, his life, and what led him to pursue music. Did you know his father wanted him to be a lawyer? Seeing what he accomplished in music, I would say being a lawyer was far from his passion! I purchased tickets this week for us to see The Nutcracker in December. I have never  een it live. I am pretty darn excited!

Math - Isaac has been doing great with math. He amazes me with his ability to do most of his math problems in his head. I still struggle to do that sometimes! If I could just keep him focused, we would be on a roll! Isaac has been learning about adding 2 and 3 digit numbers with multiple renaming. Julia has been learning about numbers from 10 - 20 and their place value. Anytime we do anything with place value I get the Math-U-See decimal street and blocks out.

Reading - Julia has now gotten to where she can read her chapter book with very little help. I am not sure what level she reads on but I am pretty sure she reads well above for her age. Isaac is reading Stuart Little still, learning a lot of vocabulary along the way.

Spanish - Isaac is a pretty far ahead of me now and Julia is right on my heels. I need to get it together and get back to my Spanish lessons or I won't know what they are talking about!!! The lessons are sticking because they are continually using the words they learn.
