Guadalupe River State Park

This really should be Gabe's post, but I don't think he has the time to blog right now.... or ever! Gabe is such a outdoors kind of guy. Loves to backpack, camp, rock climb, cycle, and go kayaking or canoeing. Since having kids a lot of this has been put on the back burner. Not because I asked him to. That's just reality. Well, last Friday Gabe bought a used kayak. We had already planned to go the river on Saturday, so what a great opportunity for Gabe to try out his new toy!

It was surprisingly a little chilly that day. Not cold, but overcast and breezy. So when you add that to water....brrrrr! The kids didn't seem to mind. Their lips were turning blue and they were shivering uncontrollably, but they could not turn down the opportunity to play in the river. Caleb even endured the cold water for a bit. He would endure anything just to get to those rocks and pebbles. Couldn't keep them out of his mouth!!

While Gabe tested out his new kayak and remembered how to roll it - GULP - something I would never do.... Isaac and Julia tried to catch tadpoles, collected shells and rocks, and took rides in our inflatable boat. Gabe would come by ever so often and pick one of the kids up for a kayak ride. They both loved it, but Isaac just lit up. This is his kind of thing for sure. So much like his Papa.

At one point during the day, I flipped the inflatable boat over to lay Caleb on while I changed his diaper. He liked it so much he just laid there giggling while I bounced the boat. A few minutes of that soothing motion and he was fast asleep. He took a nice little nap right there in the middle of all the noise of the river play. Such a sweet baby! Wish I had my camera right then, Oh well, I have it captured in my memory forever. I have a picture from a few years ago when we went to this same river when Julia was a baby. She slept on my chest as I kicked back in a chair. Seems like just yesterday!

The day was great and as always we really enjoyed our time together as family. Just a little funny side note - our minivan was rockin' with a kayak strapped to the top!!! Never thought I would see that! Too bad I didn't get a picture of that either.

What a wonderful outing for all. So glad that Gabe's got a kayak. I know how much he loves that activity. I liked canoeing with my father but never kayaked. Looked like a good way to look at the lake upside down.
