Home's Cool: Week Eleven

I was determined this week to get this post up on time. Didn't quite make it!

We had a good week. The kids did better about not dragging their feet which was last week's theme apparently. We usually start school around 8 and finish around 3, on a good day. On a bad day they don't finish until 5 or later. Ugh!  It doesn't take that long because I plan that much. It takes that long because my kids are the king and queen of piddling. Two days this week they finished early. It was so nice to have the afternoon to get some other things done and see my kids actually enjoy the outdoors. Here is a little bit of what we learned this week...

Bible - We continued learning and discussing John 7:37. We discussed an Arabic proverb..."What is the greatest crime in the dessert? Finding water and keeping silent." We talked about how we should share the Living Water with those around us and not keep Jesus all to ourselves. Isaac and Julia have recently struck up some friendships in the neighborhood and have talked about sharing Jesus with them. They even invited them to AWANA. Another project we are going to do is to get a set of water bottles, put the verse and info. about our church on them, and keep them handy in the van and house to give away whenever we see an opportunity.

History - We continued learning about the beginning of our country and our first president, George Washington. We made Johnny Cakes, which was a common thing to eat in those days. It was basically a cornmeal pancake. Didn't go over real well with anyone, including me. Blah! But the fun is in the experience, right?!

Science - We began the chapter about leaves this week. We learned the parts and functions of the leaf and about photosynthesis. The kids thought it was interesting to learn about how and why leaves change color and fall off the tree. Very fitting seeing that we are in the middle of Fall right now. I have had so much fun going through this book with the kids. I am getting to learn this stuff all over again. Love it!

Music - We listened to the Overture and The March from The Nutcracker. We discussed what an overture is and then marched to the music. Only a month to go before we get to go see it live!

Just Because - I had planned for us to go to the zoo on Thursday but my van is STILL in the shop getting fixed. (just body work on the dented fender from hitting a deer) So since we couldn't go, we took the day off at home. We played games, watched movies, and just enjoyed fully our day off. Felt good!!

Andi's Sugar Cookies - I know I posted last week that Julia finished her lapbook and folder for Andi's Pony Trouble, but she had a few more things to complete this week. Once finished, we made Andi's Sugar Cookies. Julia read the entire recipe by herself. I only helped when needed. Otherwise, I let her take the reigns. She and I had so much fun and the boys enjoyed the freshly baked cookies. YUM!
