Home's Cool: Week Twelve

I can't believe we are already 12 weeks into this school year. I am proud of what we have accomplished so far. I am pleased that this year I have managed to stay on schedule. The difference this year is really  my attitude. I have had to make home school my number one priority. It is a full time job. Everything else comes after. This has really helped my kids as well. They do much better when we are consistent with our schedule.

Bible - This week we are taking a break from our usual verses about Jesus. We read several verses this week about birds in the Bible. My favorite comes from Isaiah 40:31  "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint" The kids drew an eagle picture then wrote this verse on their picture. Our strength comes from the Lord.

History - Now that we have studied a lot about our early American history, we are now going to go on a brief tour of all 50 states. We will "visit" them in chronological order as they joined the United States of America. This week we studied Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Georgia. Each day we did a state sheet, learned about the state bird and flower, looked at the state flag, and read interesting facts about the state. Because Georgia is known for its peaches, we made peach cobbler on Thursday. YUM!

Science - We are still studying leaves this week. We have learned the anatomy of a leaf and how to classify leaves. We are also doing an experiment about transpiration (when the leaf pushes out excess water) We put a baggie around one leaf on our plant. We will water the plant everyday to see if the baggie collects the excess water. It was fun learning about the rain forest while we learned about transpiration.

Art - The kids drew fall pictures using the DWN books. Then we made owl s'mores (a recipe I saw on pinterest) Ours looked a little different because we didn't have the yellow candy melts, but it was cute and yummy!

I am not going to go into detail about all the other subjects, but the kids are doing great in each. They both enjoy reading so much. I love catching them curled up on the couch reading a book just for fun.

On Friday we had a week off from REACH (our home school co-op)so we spent the day at the San Antonio Zoo and as an added bonus Gabe got to go with us. I have been trying to get us there for a few weeks and it just now worked out. It was a delightful day of beautiful weather and three very happy kids.
