Snow Day

On February 4, 2011 the unthinkable, the miraculous, the .... okay let me just get to the point. It snowed in South Texas. A true rarity. Granted it was no more than 1/4" but it stuck to the ground and stayed throughout the morning. It was forecasted to snow all week but I didn't tell the kids about it. No use getting their hopes up. But alas the forecasters were right and it did indeed snow. Since even the hint of snow shuts the entire city of San Antonio down, Gabe knew he would have the day off. We sat in the living room waiting for the kids to get up so we could surprise them, but Isaac beat us to it. He came running out of his room, screaming "IT SNOWED! IT SNOWED!" So we all bundled up the best we could with our limited snow clothes and headed outside. Caleb was none to happy about this strange white stuff that was interfering with his breakfast. He walked around with his mittened hand making the sign for "eat". Isaac and Julia however could care less about their empty stomachs. They had a blast throwing snow balls (if you can call them that) and drawing in the snow. They only lasted for about 30 minutes before they were ready to go inside for hot cocoa by the fire. After breakfast, Caleb was at the backdoor ready to give this snow another chance. I bundled him up and sent him on his way. He played in the backyard for about an hour tasting the snow, catching drips from the roof, and thoroughly exploring the strange white stuff that had invaded his backyard. Oliver was not as thrilled with our weather events. He was shaking uncontrollably and didn't quite know what to do... other than make yellow snow. That he knows how to do! It was a fun day, but I must say I am very thankful we live in South Texas where snow is a rarity rather than the norm. I don't think I would like to live in the cold and slosh through the snow all the time. By the way, it is 10 days later and the temps outside are in the lower 70s. Love Texas weather!!

We couldn't find Isaac gloves, so we had to make do with socks. I am sure I am not the only one that has done this, right?

Love this picture! Caleb's little footprints in the snow.

Our version of a snow ball fight. The snow was so dry it would not stick together.

Oliver, not too sure about the snow and the cold.

Not enough snow for a snowman, but Isaac gathered enough for a snow face complete with carrot nose and blueberries for the eyes and mouth. Later, Isaac came running in the house shouting "OLIVER IS EATING MY SNOWMAN!"

Immediately after I took this picture, she nailed me with that snowball!
