This is one of those posts that I am sure you will get to read a "his and her's"' version. Gabe will definitely want to share his side of this experience as well. So bare with us!!
This past weekend was Isaac's first ever Pine Wood Derby Race. The AWANA program he attends at our church held this event on Saturday. For the last few weeks Isaac and Gabe have been working together to create Isaac's race car. Gabe fought the urge to "spice" up the car and allowed Isaac to do most of the work himself. The building experience was fun for them both.
We had to be at the church at 5:00 Saturday afternoon for the official weigh in. Little did we know at the time that Isaac's car would not race until well past 8:00. Lots of waiting with restless and impatient children (one of which was sick!!) We took Isaac to the race even though he had been running fevers. We didn't want him to miss out when he had worked so hard on his car. Isaac's car, as well as most of the younger children, was in the Open Division. That race did not start until the Competitive Division was over. Isaac lost his patience waiting his turn, and I can't blame him. We were all spent and exhausted by the time it was over.We had had our fill of noisy jam packed rooms with chaotic and energized children running in every direction. Even Gabe, the crowd loving people person, had had ENOUGH! We let Isaac race his car twice and finally headed home around 9:00. Far, far past bedtime. (especially for one sick, fever ridden little boy) Isaac enjoyed seeing his car race and loved watching the others. Even though the organization of the event was frustrating, I think we would do it again if Isaac wanted to. Oh, the sacrifices we make for our children!!!
