Ups:
*We had such a great time learning about Christopher Columbus and the early explorers.
*Isaac handled spelling well this week and even got all his words right on his first test!!!
*We loved making the light hut and are excited to see our herbs grow.
Downs:
*I started out the week sick and barely made it through school on Monday.
*On Tuesday, school was interrupted by a lost dog and doctor appointments.
*Wednesday got off to a slow start and everyone was in somewhat of a fussy mood.
There is so much that goes on during our school week that I would love to tell you about. Here is a little taste of what we are learning in each subject...
Bible: This week we have been reading Old Testament scriptures about Jesus. We started our Jesus posters, which we will add to all year long.

| We will add to this poster all year long. By the end of the year, it will be filled with all the names of Jesus. |
History: We have transitioned from the vikings to Christopher Columbus. We studied his life and his explorations. On Wednesday, we made the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria out of foil and let them set sail in our bathtub. They successfully made it from Spain to America even though Caleb was determined to dunk them all!! We have continued to learn the song "God Bless America" I was able to capture Julia and Isaac singing it the other day. Too precious for words!!

Science: We continued to learn about how Botanists classify plants. We learned about angiosperms, gymnosperms, vascular plants, and non-vascular plants. We put together a light hut on Wednesday and are attempting to grow lemon balm, basil, and chamomile. Once grown and harvested, we will use these herbs to make herbal soap. The biggest dilemma with the light hut was where to put it so that it was out of reach from Caleb. We had to settle with our kitchen bar. Not the most decorative accent piece in our house. Anyone who comes over will know for sure we are a home schooling family!!! On Friday we talked about what a hypothesis is and why scientist do experiments. We also did a salt water and egg experiment. They both guessed that adding salt to water would not change the way things float. They were surprised to see the egg float! We also read about the Dead Sea in Israel. Guess where they want to go swimming?!

Art: We used the Come Look With Me art book again this week to discuss the painting The Oregon Trail by Albert Beirstadt. On Thursday we used Draw Write Now to draw a Columbus and ships picture for our history notebook. Here is how they turned out...
Math: Isaac is still working on some addition and subtraction review before we dive into book 2A. Math continues to be a struggle for Isaac. He seems to loose all concentration and attention when doing math. Wee bit frustrating, but we are working our way through this issue. I realized today that he does better working with the dry erase board and one problem at a time. A list of problems to work through just overwhelms him. If that is what we have to do, then that is what we will do! Anything to lessen the frustration with math. Julia has been learning about number bonds this week during math. New concept for her, but she loved it.
Reading: Isaac has read a story this week dealing with taking care of our environment... Just a Dream by Christian Van Allsburg. He now wants his own baby tree for Christmas. He has always been our environmentalist!! He also read a story called Leah's Pony by Elizabeth Friedrich about the "Dust Bowl" of the 1930's. After reading the story he did some research to learn more about this historical event. He wrote a note to himself to ask Grandaddy if his parents remembered the "Dust Bowl". Julia started her Circle C series with Andi's Pony Trouble. We are putting together a lap book as we go along. This week she read the first chapter and outside of a little help here and there, she was able to read it very well by herself. Thank you Angela for suggesting this book series!!
And our week wouldn't be complete without some Caleb adventures! He learned something this week too.... he learned to undress himself and take off his diaper. In the middle of school I would see out of the corner of my eye my little two year old streaking through the house. Funny stuff! He also decided to try his hardest to get some computer time whether he had permission or not. He likes to swipe the mouse and run off with it. I foolishly let him type on a words document the other day. I can't tell you how many programs he opened that I had to shut down. What was I thinking?!
Other than that, I have been working with him on his language. Bless his little heart, but he is just not where Isaac and Julia were language wise at this age. He tries though. Here is a video of me trying to get him to say banana....
So proud of all the hard work my kids have put in to school this week!!
